Treatment (Research and Planning)

The concept of my music video involves a boy and girl couple in an abstract approach. I have on location a dark room to keep the focus and concentration on only the couple and their relationship representing the loss of world and that they only think of each other. By using a dark drama studio and using my choice of lighting I was able to create a light feel towards th roduction which is usually shown in a pop/dance type music video. Using the specific links with visuals and sound such as the lyrics 'you and me' and using both actors to speak creates an emphasis of the emotions that I wanted to produce. I also decided to use iteams that are not mentioned in the lyrics such as flowers and masacra to add iteams that would be seen in the steryotypical relationship. Due to many of Disclosures videos being relationship based I wanted to keep the theme apprerent with my music video.

Prop list (Research and Planning)

Prop list; You and Me - Disclosure

  • Glitter (to be thrown)
  • Feathers (to be thrown)
  • Bunch of flowers
  • Costume changes
  • Mascara
I did not use many props in my music video as I was incorporating more the use of shots to represent the atmosphere of the music video compared to props. Although this the use of the flower i personally liked due to the representation of relationships and giving flowers.

Location Research (Research and Planning)

When I came up with my initial idea I wanted to use a black background to keep the focus on the characters. Therefore, the perfect location was Newlands Girls' School drama studio. The availability of the lights so I could create my own lighting choices was great as it was the best possibility to showcase their faces with little shadow and with no change in natural light if I was doing an all day shoot outside. The studio involved everything I was looking for in my shoot.

Initial Thoughts and Ideas;part 2 (Research and Planning)

In addition to using glitter and feathers I was looking at ideas of what shots is could use. Due to the lyrics being rather repetitive i thought i could use shots that would always be use to present those lyrics. 'Gonna be you' 'and me' where my main focus in the lyrics due to the title and also the ambition of love. I thought as music videos incorporate many close ups i could use the actors lips as inspiration. Thus used the male lips to say 'gonna be you' and female 'and me'.

Initial Thoughts and Ideas (Research and Planning)

I had many ideas when we were initially given our tasks of making a music video, after the decision of the song it became easier to start linking ideas with lyrics and also sounds that were being produced from the music. My first idea was to have a couple lying against a black board and to move in almost robotic ways whilst different words appeared in white above them; almost like a stop motion. After much discussion this seemed to become more and more like an impossible idea as it would take hours of filming in the little time that was available to us. Thus brainstorming began again. The idea of a black background I thought would help incorporate the feel of the piece and to keep the attention on the couple, almost as if when you're in a relationship the world stops around you and at moments it's only the two of you and that's it.

As time progressed I began thinking of what i could use to represent the love that i was trying to convey in the video. I then thought of the idea of glitter and feathers being thrown in the direction of the couple in some way. This then lead on to using it in the chorus bass drops in the music as I could create an effect of passion and use reverse transition and in post production. This was my strongest idea and i believed would help represent what i wanted to convey in the best way.

I was really happy when i finally came up with a concept that I felt would work, although most of the work with the feathers and the glitter would happen in post production it would work as a way to represent love.

Costume (Research and Planning)

I sat and discussed with my actors to decide on costume choices for the shooting. Due to the idea of my video to be seen over a period of time i wanted to have a few costume changes to show the change. The actors brought some clothing ideas and we matched them according to the other, for example the red dress worn by Amelia was placed with Ollie's option of a red flannel top. A deeper meaning behind the red also linked with the idea of passion which i really wanted to be represented through the video, red connotes love well just to add more justification to it. Other costume choices were more relaxed as in comfy clothing as if out for dinner more than a club themed outing. I believe the costumes fitted the genre as they were usual teenage clothing which also connects with my target audience.

Casting (Research and Planning)

Due to the theme of the song being based around love as I depicted from 'You & Me' I looked for a male and a female characters. Due to music videos usually using attractive actors especially when presenting the look on relationships i asked my friends Amelia and Ollie. The fit the roles perfectly and where close friends too which would help when filming as it was easier the incorporate movements of 'love' with little awkwardness. I believe that it was good casting for the feel of the song and atmosphere I wanted to create. Also Disclosure rarely feature in their own music videos thus making my casting easier as I did not have to incorporate the 'look' of the band and use actors to present disclosure themselves.

Artist - Disclosure (Research and Planning)

Disclosure are an English electronic music duo consisting of brothers Howard (born 11 May 1994) and Guy Lawrence (born 25 May 1991). The siblings grew up in Reigate, Surrey. Their debut album, Settle, released on 3 June 2013 through PMR, was nominated for Best Dance/ Electronica Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards. The brothers started de-constructing and copying the music that Guy had heard at gigs in a room above their father's auction room, and then making music in the same room in a style they refer to as "popular music structured as electronic house music", uploading it to Myspace. This got them an early record deal, and a UK tour mixing live music gigs with occasional DJ sets. I have always been a fan of Disclosure when their music started to be seen on the UK music charts. I had the pleasure of seeing them live at Reading and Leeds festival in 2014 and they were an incredible band to witness live, such strength in their music as their popularity grew. I chose You & Me as it was one of my favourite music pieces composed by them.

Chosen Song (Research and Planning)

Song Choice (Research and Planning)

I chose Disclosure- You & Me (flume remix) due to the upbeat and dance style of the song that gave me the ability to create a music video around a theme that i was interested in as one of my favourite genres of music is house. This song had many developments throughout due to the large beat drops and the rise of music towards these presented to me many ideas that i could incorporate with the drops. I this that this song will give me the ability to create a strong video.

Music Video Directors (Research and Planning)

Spike Jonze
Skateboard and BMX photographer Spike Jonze took his love of all things pop culture and injected them into his many memorable videos. For instance, Happy Daysappears in Weezer’s “Buddy Holly,” musicals are sent up high in the sky with Bjork’s “It’s Oh So Quiet,” and '70s cop shows were forever altered in our brains by the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage.” Jonze is well known for his music video collaborations with daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Weezer, the Beastie Boys and Kanye West. He was a co-creator and executive producer of MTV's jackass. He is currently the creative director of Vice Media Inc.

Andrew Goodwin (research)

We begun our learning into the creation of music videos with the main conventions used and composed within music videos, thus we looked at practitioner Andrew Goodwin;

Andrew Goodwin's key features identified in a music video:

  • Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics, for example, a stage performance in metal video or a dance routine for boy/girl band.
  • There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals: either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting.
  • There is a relationship between music and visuals: either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting.
  • The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
  • There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
  • There is often intertextual references (to films, TV programmes, other music videos, etc)
These conventions will help me to keep realism to the pieces that I create.
