Casting (Research and Planning)

Due to the theme of the song being based around love as I depicted from 'You & Me' I looked for a male and a female characters. Due to music videos usually using attractive actors especially when presenting the look on relationships i asked my friends Amelia and Ollie. The fit the roles perfectly and where close friends too which would help when filming as it was easier the incorporate movements of 'love' with little awkwardness. I believe that it was good casting for the feel of the song and atmosphere I wanted to create. Also Disclosure rarely feature in their own music videos thus making my casting easier as I did not have to incorporate the 'look' of the band and use actors to present disclosure themselves.

Artist - Disclosure (Research and Planning)

Disclosure are an English electronic music duo consisting of brothers Howard (born 11 May 1994) and Guy Lawrence (born 25 May 1991). The siblings grew up in Reigate, Surrey. Their debut album, Settle, released on 3 June 2013 through PMR, was nominated for Best Dance/ Electronica Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards. The brothers started de-constructing and copying the music that Guy had heard at gigs in a room above their father's auction room, and then making music in the same room in a style they refer to as "popular music structured as electronic house music", uploading it to Myspace. This got them an early record deal, and a UK tour mixing live music gigs with occasional DJ sets. I have always been a fan of Disclosure when their music started to be seen on the UK music charts. I had the pleasure of seeing them live at Reading and Leeds festival in 2014 and they were an incredible band to witness live, such strength in their music as their popularity grew. I chose You & Me as it was one of my favourite music pieces composed by them.

Chosen Song (Research and Planning)

Song Choice (Research and Planning)

I chose Disclosure- You & Me (flume remix) due to the upbeat and dance style of the song that gave me the ability to create a music video around a theme that i was interested in as one of my favourite genres of music is house. This song had many developments throughout due to the large beat drops and the rise of music towards these presented to me many ideas that i could incorporate with the drops. I this that this song will give me the ability to create a strong video.

Music Video Directors (Research and Planning)

Spike Jonze
Skateboard and BMX photographer Spike Jonze took his love of all things pop culture and injected them into his many memorable videos. For instance, Happy Daysappears in Weezer’s “Buddy Holly,” musicals are sent up high in the sky with Bjork’s “It’s Oh So Quiet,” and '70s cop shows were forever altered in our brains by the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage.” Jonze is well known for his music video collaborations with daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Weezer, the Beastie Boys and Kanye West. He was a co-creator and executive producer of MTV's jackass. He is currently the creative director of Vice Media Inc.

Andrew Goodwin (research)

We begun our learning into the creation of music videos with the main conventions used and composed within music videos, thus we looked at practitioner Andrew Goodwin;

Andrew Goodwin's key features identified in a music video:

  • Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics, for example, a stage performance in metal video or a dance routine for boy/girl band.
  • There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals: either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting.
  • There is a relationship between music and visuals: either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting.
  • The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
  • There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
  • There is often intertextual references (to films, TV programmes, other music videos, etc)
These conventions will help me to keep realism to the pieces that I create.
